JD350- How do you remove starter motor

Post by keithh » Wed May 20, 2009 6:16 pm

Sounds like my starter on the 350 has a bendix problem. It just spins up without engaging the flywheel. On this nice evening in western MD tonight, I tried to remove the starter. Couldnt even get a 9/16 box or socket in to budge the top bolt. the bottom one I can't even get any room to move a wrench. Anyone have any experience in removing the starter, and special tools needed. I assume it is just the two bolts I can see ( but can't get to move) . thanks / keithh

i was able to remove the wires with no problems. i just can't get any room to get wrenches into the two mounting bolts. i was able to get a 9/16 box wrench onto the top bolt, but don't have much room to break the bolt free. as for the lower mounting bolt, can't get a socket or box on the bolt. will try a stubby socket drive tonight. was just wondering if anyone has had better success with the removal and i am having!

Having the correct wrench makes a big difference. You also make your own.

The Deere JDE-80 wrench works well on both the starter and the fuel injection pump (if a diesel). The Snap On wrench is even better since it has two ends.

Hey, I changed one of those! It was a trick. I could not find the "John Deere Starter Wrench" that was mentioned but I made one. I took a cheapo wrench and heated it up and bent it to the shape I needed. I could still only turn the bolts a weeny bit at a go but I did get it out and put a new one in. Good luck!

You may want to look at a disttributor wrench at your local auto parts or sears. Its hard to tell from the pics but I think you could modify one with a torch to get the right angles and I am sure it that it will be a lot cheaper

I used a long socket extension and my stubborn nature to get mine off. Wasn't easy but I did it.

I was able to get the starter off by using a combination of the JD wrench and a 9/16 distributor wrench - took some real patience - lost my watch in the process. I think my labrador took it into the hay field while i worked on the dozer!

I also just use a long extension and pull that bottom bolt first than the top bolt after .Some of those old Deeres could use some extra space between side frames and starter though .That is a job for two people who aren't afraid to get dirty good luck. Digitup.

Hey Ken,
That fuel pump looks suspiciously like that same one I made an emergency trip to PB&H on Saturday afternoon. (last minute of course)

Yep, I replaced the original lift pump during the summer when I was chasing my "fuel leak into the crankcase" problem. The original had been in there forever and I had hoped that it was the pump diaphram leaking into the block. As it turned out, the pump may have been leaking a bit (it was damp inside) but the real culprit turned out to be my CBC fuel injection pump.
Love those guys at PB&H. Always there and helpful when you need them.
