450 with engine questions

Post by JD450loader » Mon Nov 09, 2009 6:01 pm

HI everyone im new to this site and have a few questions. I purchased a 450 loader with a locked up engine, i looked for the serial# under the seat and on the kick panel and no luck, looks to me someone cut it off... anyways the engine serial numbers say its a repower 4239df, Mother deere cant tell me if its a late or early model engine, something about the wrist pin diameters are different. Can anyone give me some info, also i was thinking of adding a turbo i this a good/bad idea? will it make a serious difference?

A turbo will add some extra power but watch what kit you install some of the 4239 turbo kits had a lot of turbo lag leaving the engine hung out for for several hundred RPM more for power just before turbo boost occurs .On the 550s we installed a different Air Research turbo on 4276's and this made a big boost of power and greater fuel economy. Also a turbo cleans up the exhaust gasses burning more of the fuel .They have there benefits and are well worth the cost from new but to add on later I don't know if the dollars would be returned .Digitup.

Thank you. I assume the engine will need to be rebuilt for the turbo?

No but you will need a different intake and exhaust manifolds to go with it .These should come in the kit the newer motors were [turbo built] with up grades in the piston tops and the rest of the combustion chamber changed as well as the crank was different ,As time and technology reached the little John Deere 4 cylinder motors we also saw several upgrades on the block with more main bearings .But for some years we just put a turbo an intake manifold and a exhaust manifold on a non turbo motor. My last 450B was turbo added and at that time I had a JD410 backhoe gold digger special that was 4239 with a turbo added on as well .The first of the 450C 's were turbo built blocks when the 450C's came out so did the turbo built motor .With 450C's-450D's and 450E's that turbo was stock equipment but with the 450G's and 450 H's the motor was turbo built but the turbo was optional after that it has been stock build on the 450J that is my 450J in the small side photo . What you could do is find a used set up and throw it on the one big draw back is the pressure and return oil lines for turbo lube.Digitup.
