350B inspection cover pic. - UPDATE

Post by Rick Kr » Sat Jan 16, 2010 7:22 pm

Posted the other day that I didn't have a right brake after a loud POP. Parked it at 35-40F, when it was "froze" then popped it was 20F.

Well, I think I am getting some where. Removed the inspection cover and looks like there might be some water down in there. The sponge that is on the backside of the ins. cover, I basically wrang the water out of it.

I drove it today to move it to the center of the barn for a potential teardown, and the brake is starting to come back the more I used it. Does this make sense if it was water frozen in there? Of course the temps here for the last week have been 35F.

I am going to drop the fluid out of the finals tomorrow to see what it looks like. Here is a pic of the right side.

Also, in the other pic on photobucket, are those cylinders considered "power steering" as the manual calls them?

Any advice to next steps?

Thanks,
Rick

KenP
For some reason the last two days my brain and fingers have not been typing very well together. I go back and read my posts and think what did I just type. Been a long day and even longer week.

Anyway, the pic is looking down the inspection cover. Yes there is some water way down in clutch area. I was unable to get it to reflect on the flash.

That is what I plan on drying out (clutches). I figured I would drain/change finals since I am right there anyway.

Here's the steering pic, hopefully. Little dirty around there as I had been cleaning around that area to get the inspection covers off. Previous owners area was all sand, I continue to find sand in every nook and cranny on this dozer. Seems all the air compressor does is blow the sand from one place to another. The plan is to have everything up to snuff for spring.

More updates to come,
Rick

Drain the water completely and dry out that chamber as much as possible,Se if there are plugs in the bottom of that chamber and its opposed side as well should be cork plugs at that age .these should be removed until you hit the deep water or mud these chambers have a bad habit of taking on moisture .Digitup.

Cheap as ma Deere is my 350C had the threads for plugs but just corks stuffed in them I added the plugs .My 350D has the plugs installed so I figured the previous owner did it or Deere got frivolous no corks in the parts book!.My owners manual is for 350C and D series It shows or mentions the screw in plugs only so it is hard to know what way Deere did it .I changed my little Deere over to 3/8 square drive plugs and keep Never Seize in the threads. That is the easiest and quickest way to plug those holes .On the wide tracks you pull the plugs before transport home and throw them in just before the you get off the float to go to work .Digitup.
