Stuck Engine

Post by cdunn » Sat Feb 06, 2010 3:18 pm

This may be an individual question with many variables, but if anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them.
If a 350 Diesel engine runs hot, for whatever reason, hot enough to seize; does this always mean the engine has to be replaced? I know there are many variables, but generally, at what point does the engine become unfixable. I know that sleeves, pistons, bearings, valve train parts, possibly crankshafts are available, but I guess what I'm asking is at what point would it be more economical junk the old engine and replace, than to try to overhaul the old one. I know there is a possibility of finding a used running engine at a good price, but that's a crap shoot too, not knowing whether its going to need overhauling soon after installing. Would it be wise to take out the old engine, tear it down, see whats bad and cost to repair and then decide whether to look for engine replacement or go ahead and start looking for a replacement? I plan to do everything myself along with the help of this forum and my service manual which I already have. I can get the tractor for 3500 to 4000 and it is in really good shape other than the engine.

Unless there is a hole in the block, or the cam or crank has spun a bearing, for the most part, you would never throw the block away. 350 rebuild parts are cheap, I would just rebuild your engine.
As to used engines, you've got a used engine, no sense risking getting another one just like you got.

350 Deere Engine

Post by JWB Contracting » Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:18 am

We needed to replace an engine in our 350C after 25 years of severe service. In the mid 80's we had a bigger injection pump installed and liked/needed the extra power.

We purchased a low hour air compressor with the newer style 3 cylinder engine and it fit right in. This newer engine is incredible for power and will start in weather up to 20 degress below 0 with no either. We have been concerned that the xtra power would destroy the reverser or rear end, but we take it easy and don't let our employee run it.

This is a good option if you are keeping the machine and working the machine and do not want to do a rebuild. We will most likely do the same with our other 350C. We purchased the compressor for $2K. We try to stay away from John Deere dealers for parts due to cost, but somethings you just have to get there.
