350 Engine slow to turn over

Post by cdunn » Mon May 17, 2010 3:12 pm

I have a parts machine (350 diesel loader) that the engine is said to be good and was running when parked (about a year ago). Its been outside all this long, but covered, so I don't think a lot of water has gotten into the engine. I want to get it started so I can load it. Tried to start it but seemed very hard to turn over; drained new battery in about six or eight revolutions. Was thinking of getting some oil into cylinders by some means to help free it up some. Is there any way to do this without pulling the injectors. Any other ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated. I plan to use two heavy duty batteries as shown in manual next time I try to start it.

If the engine is turning that hard due to friction in the cylinder walls, you have a lot more problems than that. Do some more checking, make sure the cables are good, connections are good, no corrosion on any terminals, etc. If your battery is good, and it still does not turn over well, have the starter checked. Two large batteries on a weak starter will just hasten the starter's demise. My 350 spins very well in the middle of the winter with one 1000CCA battery. It has a rebuilt starter, new battery, and new cables though.

If the public only knew how many connections were cleaned and tightened after the sale of a battery, starter or alternator there would be roits in the streets.
With that said I would certainly clean all the grounds an check all the connections on the starter. You say this is a parts machine it may be worthwile to check the draw on the starter.

Hi,

Yeah! Lots of unnecessary parts have been changed due to a bad connection, for sure! I learned *long* ago to take care of the cables and connections *first*! It's cheaper that way! :P

later!

The brillant minds were right once again. I removed the starter, which on a 350 is a real task, decided to remove the selenoid and being curious opened it up and there lay the problem. It was extremely corroded and the two wires, one to the S terminal and one to the lug going to the starter motor, were both broken loose (solder attachment). I cleaned all the corrosin out and soldered to two wires to their respective terminals, reattached the selenoid and put the starter back on. On a single battery, the engine turned over about three times and started right up. This is a great website. I appreciate all the brillant minds that post on here.

Starter performance is critical on a diesel engine. I had a very worn starter on my 2010 and while it would turn over it would take a while to get it started. I put in a rebuilt starter and it turned over the engine twice as quyickly and significantly reduced my starting times.
