Injector pump drive shaft

Post by np205 » Fri Oct 08, 2010 6:25 pm

Put a new seal kit in pump about 3 weeks ago.
Had been getting fuel in the crankcase and throttle shaft seals were leaking.

Changed over to newer style governor retainer during maintenance.

Have had no problems until today.

Engine had been starting and running fine.

Today after about 30 minutes, RPMs started going down.
Engine would only run about 30% even if throttle was moved toward full.
Quit digging and limped back to the shed.

Stopped engine.
Checked filters.

Restarted engine after checking filters.
Ran for about a minute but still wouldn't rev toward full throttle.
Heard a quick squeal and engine died.

Wouldn't start again.
Set to TDC and removed pump.
Pump is seized and broke drive shaft right behind tang.

All filters were changed during maintenance. Lines are clean.
I don't abuse any machinery or run wide open. (Scared it might break!)

DB style pump.
Shaft has taper and woodruff keyway on drive end.
Deere says shaft is NLA.

Where can I get a new replacement drive shaft?

4-219 engine.

Thanks.

I put the pump back together.
Was careful and have the book.
Didn't mess with the cam ring or hydraulic head.

Not sure what happened.

The small area where the shaft broke looks like a torque limiter of sorts.

Made to break instead of something in the engine drive train.

The pump drive shaft (10213) can still be purchased new from Stanadyne.

I'm not sure that 10213 is available anymore from Stanadyne except in old-stock. It was replaced with a "thin fuel" updated version, part # 29138

Called this past week.
They stated it was still available.

Hope the information is correct.

Might be new-old-stock? Thompsons was still selling the by the old number a few weeks ago for $160 a shaft - but I KNOW they were new-old-stock.

Had called US Diesel.
$121 and some change each.

He didn't specify if NOS, said they had ordered one recently and were still available.

US Diesel has always given me great service. They sell many injection pump parts that come from Italy, as do many OEM Stanadyne parts - so who knows? Is that price they gave you for a Stanadyne shaft, or is it from Spaco? I haven't had to buy one in quite a while, but may need one soon for a Case 580CK backhoe - which probably uses the same shear-shaft as Deere does - with the DB pumps. My Standyne new-parts list shows that new number for the shaft, for use with low-lube fuels.

Do believe he stated Stanadyne.
Will know this week when I order it.

Hope I never need another one...

This actually goes on my '79 410 backhoe. (Hope I don't get trashed for this.)
Similar 4-219 engine as my 450B except turbo.

The only problem now is a replacement pump will not have the newer style retainer. (Unless I buy new, not going to happen.)

Got this backhoe for scrap price.
Previous owner thought "automatic" transmission was bad.
[Clutch linkage was out of adjustment.]

It had been sitting for a few years.
(Have had to replace numerous hoses, seals, O-rings on steering priority valve, etc)
Its good and tight. One small weld on backhoe dipper.

Tires were original, lots of tread and rotten. 18.4x24
Had to replace the back ones immediately.
Found two brand new R4s (Craigslist) on Kubota rims for $600.

Kubota rims fit right on the 410. Dish is slightly different.
Changed them out to original rims, but good to know in a pinch.

Do like the backhoe on the 450B better.
Its slower, but a lot more stable than the 410 when digging.

I suspect that goes for any backhoe mounted on a crawer, when compared to one mounted on a wheel tractor. Much more stable.

About that shaft, I misquoted the price at Thompsons. I forgot that they sell off all their stuff at 1/2 the posted price, so they have those shafts advertised at $80 each. I think they are sold out, though.

New Injector pump

Post by np205 » Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:34 am

Ordered a brand new injector pump today.

Not much difference in price between a rebuilt pump + core charge vs factory new unit.
I'd rather pay the small difference and get a new pump than take a chance on a rebuilt pump with unknown hours/years of use.

Took old pump apart
No water, rust, debris or metal shavings found.

Rotor and shaft are seized.
Tried to bump apart with plastic mallet after removing retaining ring and half moon clips.

Will press it apart. Already broke, can't hurt it.
