Fan Belt Replacement???

Post by Lakeview » Sun Oct 24, 2010 10:22 pm

I ran something in through the side of the engine and it took out the fan blade and in the process the belt. Luckily not the radiator. I have referenced the service manual. It says you can disengage the hydraulic pump drive to replace the belt. Have I read this correctly? My first problem is that the lever is gone from the shaft for disengagement. I tried putting a bar at the fork and prying, but that didn't accomplish anything. I have a fan blade that will be here tomorrow, (thanks for the measurements, Lavoy) and would like to get her back on the road so I can tear something else up. I would really like to get around taking the pump off. What are my options??????? Thanks.

don't fight it. My personal thought go to napa, buy a linked belt and have a few beers in the time you would be fighting with a one piece fan belt.

I'm sure some will argue, but we use those linked belts all the time and they are just as good as a one piece... in my opinion.

Thanks Ken. I do have the hood, grill shell off and the radiator pulled forward to get the fan blade off. I haven't really put the mojo on it yet. But what I am assuming, if I get it disengaged, I can slip a belt in between? I have seen those linked belts and they don't look that reliable. Plus I have heard they are expensive.

They are a bit more expensive. But if you're out in the woods, or there is disassembly involved they are worth it. As far as reliability we use them in industry up to 500hp in multiples when the system does not require a matched set. They have come a long way since when they first came out.

I was in the same boat about 3 months ago I had to change mine out and wouldnt disengage. I pulled hood forward, removed steel lines to hyd. pump, removed 2 bolts in pump pulled it outta the way, and fished the belt down in between, if your luck is like mine I bought a new belt that was alittle long so I ended up doing it twice in an afternoon. But hey the second time went much faster!! Good Luck I did find a gates belt at local heating air supply MUCH cheaper that Napa.....

Thanks guy's for the input. I'm not out in the woods, but working in a shed with no power, etc. I got the fan blade today, but we've had the nasty storms that are causing all the problems. So, hopefully tomorrow the weather will be better.

If you take the lines off the hydraulic pump without draining the hydraulic tank wouldn't you lose all the fluid?

Good question??? I am not sure mine was empty when I did it.... I have a french machine like yours, and the tank is higher than the pump....
Not sure might have to drain it... Or if its like mine there is a short section of hose between the tank and the steel line might be able to crimp it closed temporaily.....
