450C neutral start
450C neutral start
Hello All! I'm a new member and proud owner of a 450C. The dozer has a lot of wear on it (the hour meter was disconnected at 5500 plus hours), but it still does everything I ask it to do. Last week I went to start up and couldn't get it to turn over. I checked for voltage at the starter and got 12.5 volts, so I jumped the solenoid and it started right up. I think the problem may be in the neutral start, but I really don't know a lot about the system. Any suggestions, please?

Thanks, KenP
I guess I'll go ahead and make the investment on the service manual. I should have gone ahead and ordered it a year ago when I ordered the operator manual. I saw a link in a previous post. In the meantime I'll just jump the starter out and keep on working - it doen't seem to be hurting anything. I'm pretty careful about stalling the machine anyway. Thanks for the input.

When I had this problem the wire from the starter button to the starter had broken behind the instrument panel.
Also the rubber had split covering the starter button switch. Bought another switch at NAPA, its cover fit my starter button.
My unit has had the neutral switch disconnected. If yours is still in the circuit you should be able to access the wires to it from inside the instrument panel. You can test the continuity of that circuit from that position and see if it connects when you put the lever in neutral or when wiggling it. It should go with out saying not to solve a bad neutral switch by bypassing it.
Finally make sure you are getting 12 volt power to your starting circuit, probably coming from the key switch.
