oil leaking on steering clutchs 1970 350 seals needed

Post by gerald » Mon Jan 31, 2011 9:41 pm

I have 350 crawer oil is dripping from a hole below the dry clutchs. Im going to replace both sides. Im looking at seals. The machincal seals on the final drive houseing, I think are the seal leaking. there is a seal on final drive shaft removeing the quill and eveything with it. where could the final oil be comeing from?

The shaft you are seeing in the pic should not be there, it should have stayed with the final drive. The carrier seal is part of the large round casting you see surrounding the shaft in question. To replace that seal, you would have to remove that quill and everything in it's way. If it is a carrier seal, there would be oil leaking out around the shaft that is still stuck in there. If not, then it is most likely a pinion shaft seal on the final drive. Either way, you need to fix the offending seal, or it will just continue to ruin your clutches.

Thank you Lavoy. I would not have know that shaft would come out it is loose. It's not leaking up there. the bearing on the pinon inside the case was not seated and knocked out a chuck on the pinion an seal. I have some play in the bull gear I think will be ok with new parts an preloaded pinion bearing.

No, it is retained inside of the clutch pack, you are missing some snap rings.

Lavoy. I hope to get back down south with parts to get the old 350 back on her tracks . I looked over the service manual an don't see where the pilot shaft has a snap ring holding it in, I see the brake drum snap ring and pilot bearing snap ring, I will look closer this week end but I hope I'm right about the shift being lightly pressed in side the hub . Thank you Gerald.

The snap ring you are attributing to the pilot bearing is the one I am talking about. The pilot bearing is a press fit, no snap ring. The snap ring in question is what holds the drive shaft in the drive hub, it is definitely not a press fit.
