More info on Reverser problems...

Post by Cuzz » Wed Mar 02, 2011 6:33 pm

I had posted earlier about having some sort of problem with the reverser. When shifting reverser into forward, the motor would quit, just as if it was in two gears at once. Now I have discovered that it makes NO difference if the transmission is in gear or in NEUTRAL, it still acts as if it is in two gears at once when shifting reverser to forward. The foot clutch does NOTHING as far as disengaging the drive. I am not a bit familiar with working on crawlers but I'm guessing I soon will be. Any more ideas to diagnose would be appreciated. Thanks...
Thanks,
Cuzz...

What do you have for a crawler again sounds to me like you gernaded the clutch springs. but I am only guessing at it if I don't know size and series .Digitup.

350c that has been well used. With engine running, there is a lot of ginding noise coming from the rear of the engine/front of the reverser.
Thanks,

It can't be the clutch springs but look in the bell housing and cross your fingers .Digitup.

reverser noise

Post by JD 1010 C » Fri Mar 04, 2011 10:11 pm

Hi Cuzz; Sounds like you have destroyed the plate connecting reverser to flywhee. It looks similar to a clutch plate .It takes the shock when using reverser. Once gone there is no connection to engine and reverser pump, thus no control of clutch. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I've never done anything more than lubrication duties on my 350c and I'm not much of a mechanic in general, but I'm going to tear into it soon. I'm hoping to pick up a tech manual before I get started on it as I'm sure that would be an invalueable asset to this project. I'll post my results when I get around to working on it.
Thanks,
Cuzz...

The part that 1010 C was referring to is the torsional isolator (in case you try to look up in service or parts manual). Problems with the old style isolator are a relatively common problem on 350Cs without the isolator upgrade on the D series. Here are some posts to get you up to speed on it:

If the engine will run until you shift into forward or reversre, my money is on a locked up reverser pump, or bearings in the reverser itself. I would strongly suggest no more attempts at shifting or running, all you might be doing is adding to the cost. You will need to split the crawler, and pull the reverser I would bet.
