You will have to remover the reverser to work on it, or to get to the trans, so no loss in pulling the reverser first. If the whole thing howls that much, you should be able to feel by hand if it is the reverser output shaft, or the trans input shaft. You could also pull the trans top cover and see what you can see.

I would pull the pans they will muffle any noise . If you have a ground person to help find the noise two heads are better then one. I have my stright 350 tore down. It took for ever to get parts for the steering. I had to get a pinion an all the seals . Keep us posted what you find Gerald.

I meant once the reverser is out. I was assuming that you would pull the engine and reverser to do the trans, but if you do it the way you mentioned, then no, you would not have the reverser out.
If the reverser is quiet in nuetral, then it is not the input shaft of the reverser. If it is loud in forward or reverse, then it is not the countershaft. Only thing left is the reverser output shaft, or the trans input shaft. No way to put your hand on either one when the crawler is assembled. I would pull the trans top cover and see what you can see there. You could even drain the trans and then run the crawler again to see if the noise is obviously from the trans. Also, use a small bar and pry on the shafts and gears and see if you get any sideways play. If you do, you need trans work whether it is the source of the noise or not.
I do have some new trans and reverser parts available now, so it is better then it used to be.

Never pulled an input out of a 350, but if it is like the rest of the earlier crawler, really no way to do it until you are gutted all the way down to just the trans case. Like I said, never done it, so someone on here might have a better idea.

Ken
Im just taking a guess but id say theyre roughly 350-400lbs. It was all 2 people could do just to manuver mine around on the floor. While you have yours out do you plan to rebuild it as well?

I would strongly suggest going into the reverser as well as long as you have it apart. It is out, easy to work on, and may not have been worked on in 42 years. What if it was only going to make it to 43 years, then you are starting over next year. Do it now, you should be good for another 42 years.
