350 stopped and now won't start

I had the 350 up to temp today after doing the hydraulic filter, reverser filter and changing the transmission fluid and washing the tranny out with diesel. I shut the machine down to finish up but when I went to start it up to move it would not start. It's diesel and has always started right up and had three or four times today but when I tried this time nothing. I have had it a year and every time i shut it off with the key it takes a while to shut down. It runs for a random amount of time and then shuts off. When i tried to restart it today there appeared to fuel through the second filter. I cracked an injector but had nothing. I ran out of daylight before i could get into it any more. I searched a little on the forum and it looks like the shut off solenoid might be a good start? I am a little concerned about all the "rebuilding pumps" talk out there.

Not too familiar with 350's but any chance of disturbing the nuetral start switch or wires during your filter changes and repairs?

The neutral switch in not connected. The previous owner had jury-rigged the ignition and removed the wires going to the switch. When I made the repair I by passed it.

I did not get more info last night because I ran out of daylight but I am going to get into this morning.

I just started ripping the front yard apart so I need to get the machine back up and running PDQ.

Just by flipping through the service manual I would say i have a C series pump. It looks like there are 3 different pumps: DB, C and CB? And CB is the one you wish you did not have?

You may be having trouble with the fuel shut off selenoid.

Do you hear a clicking noise when you turn the key on? If not, there may be a problem wih your wiring. Trying runing a hot wire from your battery to the electrical post on the injection pump. Leave the key on and if you hear a click when connected, it should fire up.

If the selenoid will not click when connected / disconnect it, you will need to remove it from the top of the injection pump and clean / repair or replace. I would not recommend doing this type of work unless you are familiar with it.

I did not get a chance to work on it today but I did turn the key just for the heck of it and it fired right up. A self healing tractor...that's my kind of machine. I started it and stopped twice and it actually shut off when I turned the key off. Maybe something worked its way through the solenoid?

It looks like the piece the wire goes into screws in with like a small spanner wrench or large screwdriver?

Hi,

Probably an intermittent electrical connection between the key switch and the shut-off solenoid.

Presuming, of course, you *have* and electrical shut-off solenoid. The JD350 I had did not. It was a mechanical shut-off, worked by the throttle lever...

dont overlook the nuetral safety circuit even if it jumped out. it is normally open so if it is shorted somewhere it could give you intermittent problems. it should be easy to hook back up and when the wires are off the switch, it pops out of the trans housning real easy. you can pull the switch, free up the pressure ball and re-hook up. good for safety. having this thing roll over your foot if you evger go to start from the ground is scarey. i had water in the trans fluid and it froze the ball in the switch so it gave the symtoms of no start. takes 10 minutes.dd
