350B Engine Removal

Post by DavTom » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:08 am

Can the engine, radiator, and pump be pulled as a unit?

Also, are there any hidden bolts that will require dropping the belly pan?

Just got the final drives back on and test ran it when all heck broke loose in the flywheel area... Now pulling engine to find what happened... Hoping it's just a clutch...

No, pretty sure you will have to take them off first, but could be wrong.
Shouldn't be a clutch on a B model, most like it is an isolator problem.

DavTom-

Here are some threads on the torsional isolator in case you are not familiar with the issue:

Thanks Lavoy...

The tech manual isn't very thorough on the engine removal procedure, only dedicated a couple paragraphs to it... But I did find a note that says Alternate method would be to remove the engine, radiator, and pump with support as a unit... So I guess I answered my own question...

Found the flywheel area in it now, with reverser it has an isolator, without reverser it has a clutch... Mine has a reverser so I guess (hope) it's a busted isolater...

The clutch adjustment gauge I purchased from you worked great on the steering clutches...

350B Engine Removal

Post by JWB Contracting » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:14 pm

Yes, you can pull the radiator, hydraulic pump and engine as a unit.

You need to remove the hard nose and stump pan. You will need to drain your hydraulic fluid.

I believe there are 6 bolts which hold the engine in, 2 on each side of the engine when looking from the front and 2 from the top of the bell housing side.

Watch out for the reverser cooler lines and power assist on your steering, water temp, oil pressure, tach etc.

Our 350C's have been rewired and we don't reinstall any guards, and leave the front floor boards out. With two men, we have pulled an engine in 37 minutes.

There's something missing here...

Here are some of the missing pieces...

Pulled the front section of the pan but found out I didn't have to after all...
It's not easy to get a 6'2" 275 pound man under this thing...
There are only 4 bolts holding the engine to the rest of the driveline...

Nope, they are all Deere parts only.
The late style torsonial isolator is obsolete, as is the flywheel you need to do the conversion. Last three isolators I bought from Deere the week they went obsolte were $1500/each.
I have all of the research done and a manufacturer to make the isolators for me, just had not done it due to lack of demand. I know where there are a few flywheels left, so that is not a big deal. If enough people are looking for the late style isolator, I will dig my notes back out and look again at having them made.

The spring isolator system is no longer used and there is a replacement system to use in its place.
Try this thread. It contains what you need to know to make a decision:

http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... php?t=2823
The new style listed in that thread is no longer available from JD so looks like I'll be rebuilding this one...

Looks like around $1700 for everything to patch it back up...

That seems a little high. If you want to e-mail me that part numbers, I can see if I can save you any money.

A couple of the parts I looked at came with one of the other items so I didn't need them, brought the total down to just under $1500...

1 - JD9449 - BEARING, BALL 8.65

5 - T55320 - RETAINER,SPRING 32.45 each = 162.25

5 - T29675 - SPRING ,ISOLATOR 51.04 each = 255.20

5 - T29706 - ANCHOR ,FLYWHEEL SPRING 11.64 each = 58.20

5 - 25H1052 - PIN, TAPERED AND GROOVED 1.37 each = 6.85

5 - 19H3032 - SCREW, HEX SOCKET HEAD 3.29 each = 16.45
