I now own my first crawler. A 1966 450 model diesel with the L-H-Reverser transmission and 6 way power dozer blade. It is in great condition for it's age and came with Operator, Parts and Service manuals.
All the manuals show the rollers and the service manual says to grease the rollers but there are no fittings. On the ends of the rollers are pipe plugs installed with a 5/16 allen wrench. Am I supposed to remove these plugs, install a zerk fitting, pump in the grease, remove the fitting and reinstall the plug? This is not spelled out in the manuals. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Tom-
I think you have aftermarket rollers that aren't regularly greased- see the attached thread and specifically lavoy's response towards the beginning.

Someone might have changed them to ones like on my 450D--oil lubricated.Take out an allen plug and see if oil starts coming out.If it does, well, there's nothing more to say or do as long as there's enough of it.

On page 54 of OM-T62743 (which is for a 450C Crawler) it gives specific instructions on how to check and fill the oil level of the front Idler and Track Rollers. On the Track Carrier Roller the oil fill plug should be at the three or nine o'clock position. You are supposed to replace the check plug with a 1/8 inch grease fitting and use John Deere SAE 30 Oil or equivalent. Fill until oil begins to flow from the oil level check hole. After filling to desired level, allow oil to stop draining from the oil level check hole before replacing check plug. Failure to do so could result in seal damage due to excessive oil pressure. Note: Coat threads on fill plug and oil level check plugs with Loctite or equivalent sealant before replacing them. After oil has stopped flowing from the oil level check hole, replace the check plug. Remove grease fitting from the fill plug hole and IMMEDIATELY replace fill plug. Hope this helps. Charles
