JD 450 Roller question

Post by Tom in Mo. » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:32 am

I now own my first crawler. A 1966 450 model diesel with the L-H-Reverser transmission and 6 way power dozer blade. It is in great condition for it's age and came with Operator, Parts and Service manuals.
All the manuals show the rollers and the service manual says to grease the rollers but there are no fittings. On the ends of the rollers are pipe plugs installed with a 5/16 allen wrench. Am I supposed to remove these plugs, install a zerk fitting, pump in the grease, remove the fitting and reinstall the plug? This is not spelled out in the manuals. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Tom-

I think you have aftermarket rollers that aren't regularly greased- see the attached thread and specifically lavoy's response towards the beginning.

(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

You have oil filled rollers and the fitting can be removed and a refilled with oil or if they are leaking the oil out then install button grease fittings found in any Napa store as well as the grease gun coupler needed for this application .You can use ordinary grease fittings but as down in the dirt that they are you are better off using the button fittings and fill your grease gun with corn hear grease or Lucas red and tacky grease .first time filling purge roller with grease then add several pumps per greasing after [there can be a fair chamber to fill sometimes .Do your top roller as well the same way .If you live close to Lavoy you can get the parts from him on here He knows what you need and be glad to keep your Deere working .Digitup.

My 1967 450 has all the rollers on one side with zerks and the other side has all sealed oil-bath rollers. I was scratching my head for quite a while right after I first brought it home :)

Watch some one didn't install the rollers backwards look inside and you may find the plugs I have been there on a newer machine and when we changed the tracks and rollers the mechanic put most rollers in backwards .Digitup.
