450C Spool Valve 6 Way
450C Spool Valve 6 Way
Hello All,
It is difficult to find down pressure and my float detent doesn't engage. It has been this way since I got the machine - not getting worse. Otherwise hydraulics seem good - no leaking off.
I have the machine inside going over hoses, etc. and would like to fix this.
Can anyone give me any tips on where to look / start and what I might be into?
Many thanks!
Bill

Inside that valve there are ports when you move the lever the spool lines up with the port your useing . My guess would be to look at the hyd schemtic an find a check valve first then go into the valve to see if there isn't something lodged in that port
or even galled spool in that one area,
or even galled spool in that one area,

float the blade
my 450 b would not get to float my linkage had a lot of play i pull it apart and repaced pin and i had to make some bushings but now down pressure is easy and it locks in to float
Sounds like it could be linkage or inside.
I bought a bunch of plugs and I'm replacing hoses so I'll get it out and go from there. I do have considerable play in the linkage but it didn't seem that bad. I checked on a linkage kit and it was $900 so I know I won't be going that route.
Thanks.

Quick Linkage Fix
I have seen a few machines with poor linkage that were fixed with a cutting torch or a grinder. Simple cut away part of the guard surounding the T handle so that you can move the lever farther. If you are not worried about restoring your crawler you could go this route.

Chances are if you are using the lever kind of valving you need new orings on your valves.
However. If you have a joystick where it is cables running out to a seperate valve body.... I would recomend you first check adjustments and your cables.

I don't know but was told by the dealer that the o-rings don't have any affect on valve function - just there to keep from leaking. Getting it out doesn't look all that difficult since I'm replacing hoses anyhow, so I'll get it out and take a closer look.
Thanks for the replies and I'll report back.

I had a 2010 with real sloppy linkages on the 6-way. I took the valve into the shop, drilled out each hole in the linkage to the appropriate size and put in the next larger roll pin. Tightened it up like new.
On my current 350 the lever wouldn't hold in the float detent. There is a linkage outside the valve body. Make sure it's clean and not worn out, mine was worn out, bought the new parts at jdparts.deere.com

6 way
for 5 years i ran my 450 with the cover open but with 10 dollars for pins and some steel brake lins to make some bushing it work great pain taking off the vavle but you can tear off with some time about 2 hrs it will work the way it should note on the machine no hyd lines removed
I got the spool valve off and took off the cap and detent at the bottom of the lift circuit spool. It was a corroded mess. I think I have how it is supposed to work figured out. The plunger looks like it has no lip at all left. New parts should be here in a couple days. Will try to post some pictures before putting it back together.

Schematic is WRONG
Just for what it's worth to anyone who might go through this process, the JD schematic for this Spool Valve is WRONG!
Part number 22 (Plunger) is shown backward.
There is no way it will go together as shown.
Also the 5/16" lock washer (27) they send you will not fit on the screw. It is a no go.

Re: Schematic is WRONG
Thanks for the tip. My 450 has the same symptoms with down-pressure and I will probably be doing the same thing if I ever find time and money. The schematic goof is pretty funny. Too bad the guy who drew that has probably been retired for a while now or you could call Deere and get him in troubleFarmboy wrote: Part number 22 (Plunger) is shown backward.
