Steering clutches for 350 C 1976.
Steering clutches for 350 C 1976.
We are about to buy a 1976 350 C. It has been sitting there for 5 years and we could get the engine to run after several attempts. The engine does not smoke when hot, and the hydraulics and traction works fine. The only problem, it does'nt steer! The owner says it has dry clutches on it, but he is not sure. My brother (diesel mechanic) says it should be wet clutches...Any clue who is right and how to verify?
If it is truly a 1976 350C then it should have wet clutches and the 3164 engine instead of the 3152 engine.

However are you sure it is a 1976 or a "C" model? Sometimes there is confusion because the "C" in some of the model ID numbers also mean "crawler". The way to tell is from the six-digit serial number itself.

Just an FYI 350C's used the 152s until 81? I believe. Also a 350 "C"s serial tag will read 350C followed by a letter designating its configuration (see pic)./
A few ways to tell are to look under the seat, a C will have a small valve on top of the transmission with 2 hydraulic lines and 2 valves that are hooked to your steering levers. Also the final drives are different, a C will have 3 bolts that hold the brake anchor that are visible from the outside of the final, they sort of stick out because they aren't in line with the mounting bolts.

I should have read your post a little farther in the FAQ that I linked toCatD8RII wrote:Just an FYI 350C's used the 152s until 81?

Is it a C
Best to look under the seat to verify it is a C. I never trust a decal or a serial number.
A C model will have the steer cluch handles conneced direcly to a valve on the rear of the transmission / rear end housing. If it is connected to the steering clutch housings, it is not a C.
C's do rarely give steering clutch troubles even with severe use.
