JD450 bottom rollers stuck
JD450 bottom rollers stuck
These rollers are sealed so they are not original equipment. I have a couple that are just stiff, but two I cannot turn by hand.
Has anyone had any success drilling them for a grease zerk or heavy weight oil then seal the hole with a plug. Its a 1967 and I dont use it that much so saving about $500 bucks appeals to me for a little labor.
Anyone have any experience ? If not, where did you get your last replacement rollers???

rollers
The newer style roller uses oil and not grease. They have two allen screws. One for fill and one for bleed to prevent blowing out the seal. Take a small tool and dig the dirt out of the allen screws. I would fill with oil first and see if you can get them to rotate.
It soulds as if they are low or dry on oil and damaged

There's a guy in NY that has a (permanent?) eBay ad up for used bottom rollers for $50/each Buy It Now. He says pickup only though, so you'd have to contact him to try to convince him to ship them.
If you manage to get some oil in them, but it leaks back out due to bad seals, you could try using JD Corn Head grease instead of oil.

Are the allen screws dead in the center of the axle of the roller? Mine have a dimple but I've dug them out a few times and can't find in allen head. The machine is 10 miles from me now so I'll check later in the week.
If not in the center then where?
Thanks for the ebay Pennsylvania site...a long way from Virginia for a special trip...maybe someday.
Thanks for any other advice. Gotta get this thing fixed and dig some soon!

rollers
One is dead center and is the fill. The other is about a 1/2 inch higher and to the right some and is the bleed relief to prevent blowing the seal.
You can remove the tip from a grease gun and the fitting will screw right into the hole. I just fill the gun with 30 wt oil.
