bearing preload

Post by lp14255 » Sun Jul 10, 2011 3:23 pm

i'm in the works of rebuilding my 350's trany, i'm trying to get the output shaft preload right. i've done the cone point adjustment has the manual states, mine came out to be .024 . now the output shafts front bearing preload adjustment dont come out right. with no shims on the front bearing i have at least 1/8 inch of end play. the book said to start with .035 i did and it got worse. what now?

When you say your cone point came out to .024, are you talking about the shim thickness behind the pinions rear cone bearing? Also, are you using the old output shaft or is it a replacement shaft. I know a 350 is different, but on a C, there are no shims and you set the end play by tightening the nut on the end of the shaft. When you say you still have 1/8" of end play, is that after youve bottomed the nut out on the shaft?

yes im using the old output shaft and the .024 is the thickness of the shimms behind the cup. after tightning the castle nut to 100lbs and seat it , there still is atleast 1/8 of end play. i did all the measurements that the manual says to do ,to get this far along and they all where good except preloading this last bearing.

It would almost sound like you're missing a spacer or washer.

Its tough so say from a parts book, but is number 8 present and accounted for? It would almost seem like it spaces out the shim pack? This setup is unique to the 1010 and 350, the B's and Cs don't use the shim pack on the front bearing.

yes i have the #8 spacer on the shaft. thats just it , if the spacer is on the shaft , i can move the whole thing in and out . when i take the spacer out and tighten the castle nut to 100lbs i get the preload thickness the book says for .

Is the spacer direction specific? I know on some of the two cylinders, you have to have the spacer on a particular way.

i found that i had a bad bearing , replaced with another new one and everything came out ok but now i'm trying to press off the 4th gear on the input shaft to replace those bearings and replace the cluster gear and the 4th gear wont break loose , i dont want to break anything , i thought the woodruff key might be in a bind dont know any suggestions.
