Final Drive Removal

Post by cdunn » Sun Jul 10, 2011 8:22 pm

I am in the process of rebuilding the steering clutches in my 67 JD 350 (straoght). I have removed all the bolts as outlined in the manual, but the final drive will not separate from the clutch housing. It is STUCK to say the least. I have tryed comventional methods ie- attempting to drive screwdrivers, small crowbars ect. into the joint but the joint is not wide enough to allow the thinest tool to enter. I have used a small hammer around the edges where possible to no avail (don't want to do that very much for obvious reasons). Apparently it was sealed very well when last put together. Any one have as idea short of explosives that would help in this situation?

I had to use small chisel an screw drivers an worked my way around the houseing . It only flanged in a little, but the brake bands could make it hard comeing out all the way .

Inside Bolts

Post by JWB Contracting » Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:43 am

Did you get the two bolts from the bottom inside of the steering clutch case to the final drive?

Just a thought.

JWB- Yes I did and they are a bear to get to, especially when torqued to about 250 ft. lbs. also the four on the side that bolts the rear cross-member to the final are almost as bad. Thought I might carefully apply a little pressure horizonally with a porta-power in the area where the draw bar attaches to the final case and see what happens.

IP14255- Thanks for the reply -Yes I did remember to do that; basically the hold up was the two bolts that hold the drawbar on that side, fastens into the final, and they have a bushing that the bolts pass through and the bushing fills the remainder of the hole. Apparently those things are press fitted. Also there was another bolt up toward the front of the tractor that holds a bracket for the belly pan to bolt to that bolts into the final on that side. It also has this type fastning. Those things were really hard to get loose. I do have it apart now and as soon as I get a parts list together, I'm going to give Levoy a call.

glad you were able to get it apart . my drawbar had slots cut into it so it would slide out. someone had the dozer apart before and didn't do a very good job of putting it back together right so i get to do it now. this is a good site with alot of helpful people.
