Power Steering Leak?

Post by GlennP » Thu Jul 14, 2011 11:55 am

Any suggestions on how to locate the problem with the power steering reservoir leaking? Shortly after filling the reservoir it completely drains everytime. No idea where it is going and alos wondering if is okay to operate with no fluid? Thanks!

Kemp What do ya think the differnce will be if the power steering was working? My power steering has been empty for years. I'm afraid the pump will lock up and set a grenade of in the engine.

Ken,
I will check the engine oil level next time I fill the reservoir. How will this impact the engine?

There is another fix.
We teed off a line from the engine oil pressure sending unit to the top of the power steering cannister. Put a cutoff valve in the line to control the trickle of oil into the reservoir. Use motor oil to power the power steering and as it trickles back into the engine it just recirculates. Less than 20 bucks to solve the problem. I will overhaul the pump someday when I have more time. Its been about 3 years with this method though!

Oh, I did use some silicone or form a gasket to seal the reservoir in case you allow too much oil to trickle in sometime. It is controlable!
