Buying a 1988 450 E ?

Post by Buddy » Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:02 pm

Hello all, Enjoying this JD site, I'm looking at purchasing a 1988 450 E, It shows 2100 hrs and looks to be in fine shape, the uc looks to be in great shape, tracks about 50%, new paint, seat and gauges. It has the 6 way blade and a ripper bar, also has a rear remote hydrauic hook up for other attacments. This will by my first JD, is this model a good dependable dozer for ranch work ? I read about a couple of problems with parts being available and an issue with turbos ? The one I'm looking at has no turbo, is it going to have enough power to do the work ? I did test run it on flat ground and all functions seemed tight, I could not push with it for it was in the sellers back yard.... I more or less fell in love with it when I saw but I don't want that to miss-lead me.... The only track layer I have ever owned and operated is 1938 3J D2 and it's been a good machine but I need a little more dozer to get the ranch cleared and cleaned up,

Any thoughs will be much appreciated

Thank you all,

Buddy K

the 450E is a good machine they only inherited problems when they were turbo built and ran hard They had a 4276 engine so push is no problem that motor tromped a 4239 any day and the power shift pistons were chromed and last twice as long as previous models .Deere was on the way to a great dozer at that point ,when they componentized in the G series they have had the competition in the dust ever since as far as I am concerned.Digitup.

Thanks for the info,

Could a person install a turbo on the 450 E down the road if needed ? Or would it not be worth it ?

I would be a little concerned about adding more power, the rest of the drive train (tranny, steering clutches) might not stand up. The 4276 should have adequate power, best to get it working and see how it performs.

We have ran into a problem on one of our 350C widepads by installing a newer style 3 cylinder out of an air compressor. We have already done the reverser / transmission coupler once (20 hours of labour) and now take it very easy on it. The new engine has way too much torque.

The 450Es were built for a turbo option it would be no big problem and the motor would run cleaner .Digitup.
