I dont know how your gear is on. Yet on class 8 trucks (tractor trailers) a splined shaft going into a gear can get "torqued" making other wise straight splines be knocked evere so slightly out of straight. Hopefully yours is just a smooth shaft. Are you pressing this off with a hydraulic press? Have you tried to thrust the gear in other direction? As in is there a shoulder you may have been pushing the gear onto?

yes im using my hydraulic press . the gear is on a splined shaft with a thrust whaser then a set of gears behind it so i cannot press it in the other direction. im afraid of putting to much pressure on the shaft .

yes thrid gear is off . i know that sometimes a woodruff key can get in a bind when trying to press whatever its holding off its shaft. i took a pounch and taped down on it to release some pressure but no success.

well i was able to press off 4th gear on the input shaft with a little heat . i used my torch on low and only applied heat for 1to 2 minutes at tops , the gear didnt get red hot or anything like that , but can i still use this gear and not worry that it might fail later.

4th gear

Post by doc40c » Thu Jul 21, 2011 3:25 pm

hi lp14255, as was said on other posts, 4th gear is almost never used on a crawler. i've never put mine in 4th in 20 years! so, if you were pretty easy on the heating you probably didn't change the physical properties (heat-treatment) of the gear that much. i wouldn't hesitate using it, but then again i wasn't there to witness the heating process during removal. go with what your past experiences and your gut tell you. good luck on your project! randy from michigan
