Starter 66 450 crawler

My 450 would not start, so I jumped the starter with a screwdriver and it turned over, but not fast enough to start the machine, I went out and bought a new solenoid and replaced it but it did not solve the problem, so I took the starter out so I can replace it, but was wondering if it is better to rebuild the one I have or buy one already rebuilt?

sounds like the armature is draging on the fields if the arm is not shorted or has been so over heated that it flung the solder then you can rebuild it yourself new brushes and bushings there should be three bushings in that starter make sure you do all three i have had people tell me that the center bushing dont matter BS it has to be good or the arm drags its there for a reason i had a bad arm in my 2010 starter it was 75 for a replacment

Where can I get a gear reduction starter, would Nortrax or PB&H have one in stock or is it a special order?

As I can't get anything today, I may do as JT suggest and take the old one apart, if I can figure out how to rebuild it maybe I'll give it a shot, if it's over my head I'll start shopping for the gear reduction one tomorrow.
