GREASE

Post by BILL T » Sat Sep 24, 2011 6:40 am

I JUST INHERITED A JD 350B, YEAR 1974 WITH 6 WAY BLADE, WITH @ 2200 HRS. COULD ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF GREASE TO USE IN ROLLERS AND IDLERS. I HEAR JD CORN HEAD GREASE IS THE BEST OPTION. ALSO, I ONLY HAVE A REGULAR LEVER TYPE GREASE GUN. HOW DO I TELL IF I HAVE ENOUGH GREASE IN THERE WITHOUT DAMAGING ANYTHING? I WILL BE USING THIS FOR LIGHT WORK AROUND THE FARM. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Hi: Use corn head grease, and a pistol type grease gun with a gentle hand - you'll be better able to feel the pressure building in the roll. The low pressure guns are no longer available. I have the button head fittings on my rolls and idlers, but the zerk type fittings feel similar. I 'll bet a few of your seals are already in poor shape and you'll feel the difference which will guide future greasing.

I generally give a few (4-6) shots and stop, rather than over loading the seal, after every 10 or so hours of work; more often if in mud or water.

A low pressure oil gun is still avalible ALEMITE #4035 about $200 with button head but works so sweet with SAE140

The low pressure Alemite gun is still 4,000PSI on the low setting if I remember correctly. With the long lever, you still need to be more careful than you might have to be with a pistol grip gun, but it definitely works.

That's not bad at all, that's half of the pistol grips. I will have to see if I can find one locally.
