Another thing I just thought of is if you have a hydraulics shop in your area, you might just want to take that stuck adjuster in to them. I'm guessing they could press it apart and put a new seal in for a lot cheaper than buying a new adjuster.

Thanks tjdub I'll keep that in mind when I get the clutches done.

Just another question. Does anyone know of a more elegant way to get the old hydraulic fluid out of the reservoir than just dumping it on the ground?
When I remove the seat/tank assembly whatever fluid in the reservoir will just run out.
Looking in from the top I don't see a way to easily get a hose in there to siphon it out. It's kind of baffled. I suppose I could remove the sight glass and siphon it from there.
Anyway just askin.

There should be a drain plug on the bottom (#6).

tjdub where are you looking. If you tried to post a picture it didn't work.
I don't see a drain for #6 on either the service manual or jd parts site.

Ok now your picture worked. Where did you get the picture?
That part is #11 on the jd parts site.

I will look under there for a drain. Sure wouldn't be much room to get at it though.

I just linked to the picture on jdparts.deere.com. I looked it up under model 6405 (the 6-way blade model). I'm not sure if the drain plug is there on all versions.

tjdub I looked very carefully underneath the hydraulic box and I'm not seeing any drain plug anywhere. The reservoir is an integral part of that box isn't it?
The hydraulic fluid level is below the sight glass at this time. Do you think it would be easy just to remove the glass and then pump or siphon the fluid out?
Just don't like the idea of dumping it all on the ground.

I wouldn't mess with taking that sight glass off. It sounds like trouble.

Maybe just take the screen/filler cap assembly out of the top and then pump the oil out with a hand pump? Other than that, there's a line that goes from that reservoir to the hydraulic pump. Maybe there's a place to disconnect it were you could get a bucket under it?

Sorry, I've never drained the hydraulic oil out of mine yet (not on purpose anyway).

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid Ken.
The tank outlet/pump inlet is a large pipe with a hose/clamp section right under the tank. No where to easily get a bucket under there. The other end at the pump inlet is in the nose piece. Can't get much of a bucket in there. It would just flow down the nose piece onto the belly pan and onto the ground.
tjdub if I take the filler plate off, what is under there. The manual shows some kind of filter assembly under there. Is that the only filter in the hydraulic system on this tractor? That should probably be checked anyway.

i use a 10.00 self priming suction hose no mess easy to use pull out the filter in the top of the tank drop it in shake it and it will drain in about 5 mins and no mess

hi Fl450b, those self priming suction hoses are really neat (my friend uses one to fill his pontoon boat), but i haven't been able to find one anywhere! any suggestion on who might supply one? thanks, doc from michigan.

Yep, it's just a screen that you can take out and clean up. That's the only filter for the hydraulic system. If it plugs up that little knob next to the filler cap pops up to let you know it's plugged. You're supposed to clean it up before you have to figure out what that little knob is for though

Now doesn't that look sweet? I tried getting the link around the pin red hot but it still wouldn't budge. Now this is a headed pin mind you. How the heck did the PO get this pin so stuck in there?
Unfortunately I had to burn through the head some to get it to release.

I guess I just got a little frustrated there at the end and just said the heck with that pin, it's coming out !!!!!

Now on to the next step. Getting those big 3/4 inch bolts out of those sprockets. That could be an adventure in it's self.
