I live in Texas so this is not a real big problem down here but I would favor keeping the coolant and block warm. An oil heater will keep the oil flowing easier and make it easier to crank over but heat in the block and head is needed to make the diesel burn when compressed. I understand just running the heater a while before you want to start usually works pretty good.

I agree on the tank heater to get a cold diesel going. I have seen some pictures posted showing a tank heater installed on a 350.
Does anyone have pictures of their 450 crawler with tank heater installed?
The service manual doesn't show anything and the jd parts site shows the heater and pipes but not in relation to the engine. It would just be nice to see some installation pictures. thanks

Coolant Heater

We install these on the left side of the engine. There should be a plug into the engine block about mid way between the the head and oil pan toward the back of the engine and then tie into the water pump jacket. I can't remember if you have to drill and tap into the water jacket or if there is an existing hole.

We leave our 450C loader backhoe outside and plugged in all winter and even at -30 Celcius it will fire up without either. Snow actually melts on the hood.

I see a really small pipe plug in the side of the block about half way down.
It's sort of between the injection pump and the rear of the engine. Is that the plug you mean?
There is another pipe plug in the thermostat housing. Is that the top connection?
Well that's good. At least the left side of the engine is somewhat easy access.

Do you have pictures of the installation?

Thanks
Dennis
