Grille removal

Post by 77 Ford » Tue Nov 29, 2011 10:10 am

What is the best way to remove the grille of a 450c Track loader? I down loaded the service manual and was a bit disappointed all it says is "remove". I know it is very heavy and I'm sure I can figure it out but there has to be some tips and tricks to make it easier, thought I would throw it out there and see.

I need to replace my radiator hoses and this looks like the only way to get it done.

On a side note, I found a place that has ran down 3 ROPS with brackets for my 450c, I'm just working on getting pictures and freight charges to determine which one I want.

If anyone is looking for a ROPS shoot me a message and I'll put you in touch with the guy who ran them down for me.

Could be wrong, but if the 450C loader grill is the same as on my 450C dozer, you take out the bolt in the top center of the grill and it tilts forward for removal. My 350B had a small wheel welded to a bolt, but my 450 simply has a bolt that takes a 3/4 inch wrench.

77 you aren't talking removal of the hard nose are you? That is a bit more work removing it than just the grill panel .But it dose tilt forward if you can block your loader up with some angle irons on the loader rams to be safe then figure out what side bolts to remove to tilt the hard nose forward ,If you are just replacing the rad hoses you may want to get good at working in confined areas and practice up on your curse words I would think you should go in from the top and sides .Digitup.

Well I was wanting to pull the radiator and pressure wash it all out and clean it all up good. The oil cooler is really roughed up, I think the fins need some help, looks like at one point in it's life the fan must of gotten into it.

I've got a tractor with a FEL so I'm hoping I could get it loose and lift it off out of the way without a ton of trouble. Maybe I should just try and replace the hoses for now and wait for summer to pull the radiator.

Best guess what is the nose going to weigh 300 pounds or so?

Those fins are very delicate- I would not use a pressure washer unless on a very low setting.

There is also an inexpensive tool to help straighten fins without breaking them- I saw one at Harbor Freight Tools but they can probably also be fo8und at auto parts stores.

Hardnose Removal

Post by JWB Contracting » Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:05 pm

Digitup started you on the right track.

Block your loader up (safely, buy some angel iron or U channel, plus chain it in place, let loader down, watch cylinder seals) and then place a large crowbar accross the loader frame. The use a come along attached from the crow bar to a chain going from the center grill amount back up into the radiator fill hole.

You just then need to remove the 3 side mounting bolts on each side (15/16 headed bolts) plus the bottom stump pan mounting bolts. Very easy, it took me less than 5 minutes on a 350B dozer this weekend using a small shop crane. I had to remove and braze up a reverser cooler line.

I have never bothered just tilting the hardnose forward, better to get just at it and remove the whole assembly.

Thanks for the tips, I'll see what I can get done this weekend.

Speaking of blocking the loader up, anyone have pictures or measurement on the loader lock bar? It looks a little like a half cut piece of pipe to me that rest on the cyl rod.

Thank you for the pictures, I think I have some 4" on hand. I'll get some brackets made and find some chain before I do my service work this weekend.

Just a quick note to be added to thread for if someone searches and finds this in the future.

You also have to remove the bolts from the skid plate to the nose to get it to either tilt or remove.

I removed mine last night with my 1900 ford tractor with a FEL. Came off pretty easy once I got those bolts out of the bottom....

If it's like my 350C, there is a big nob at top of grill that you can hand spin...If stuck, get some PB Blaster. The grill should just tip forward after that. The nose of machine is much more complex and heavy. I just posted manuals for 350C on the web links section...

Hi

I'm new to this site and glad I found it, I may well be asking a few questions as new first time crawler owner, I purchased my first farm/heavy piece of equipment in the form of a JD 350A loader with back actor last year, primarily to clear some overgrown land. Interesting thread about the serial numbers and years, mine is clearly marked as a 350AA but also points to a 1979 year. I'll add more later and some photo's if I can in the relevant thread.

I found this site as I was searching for an answer to a question and came across this thread, I was looking for a method to lock the loader. Can anyone help with the photo's and/or description of the locking bar, KenP seems to have deleted his post. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

350AA points to an EU (Mannheim) built machine with a loader and a diesel. I don't know if their serial numbers follow the US (Dubuque) build as far as years go. We did figure out what the first A meant, but not how they assigned serial numbers. May have had some blocks assigned, so then the serials would follow the US years. May have had their own. We just don't know.

Ya, Ken did a scorched earth policy when he left the boards for some odd reason.

I'll measure my angles tonight and let you know but they are just 2 pieces of 4" angle. You raise the loader up high then lay them on the exposed parts of the cylinder shafts and then slow let the arms down until they contact the angle. At this point the loader cannot come down any lower as it's locked against the cylinder.
