HI !

not sure about a 1968 but mine ( 1966) has one inside the hydraulic oil tank.

your best bet is to obtain the parts book for your machine , available on e-bay an on the John-Deere site .

I own a 68 350 straight dozer. In the three years I have had it, I have searched diligently for the hydraulic oil filter. Any number of people have told me its in the tank, but it ain't. Mine has a small tank compaired to the hydraulic tank on the 350 straight loader. I also own a 350 straight loader and it has a filter in the larger tank. My shop manual and parts manual neither one makes any distinction between the hydraulic tank on this model dozer or loader, but in the operators manual it does show a picture of the tank on a dozer (smaller and no filter) and the tank on loader (larger tank with filter). So I'm declaring that there is at least one 350 straight (dozer) , and now maybe two that does not have a hydraulic oil filter in the hydraulic oil tank.

It is possible that your dozers may not have filters although it will be rare. The reason the loaders had larger tanks was because of the larger amount of oil needed to control the extra hydraulics that was involved with the loaders. Most had Back hoes and needed the extra capacity.

350 and 350B Outside Mount Dozers

Post by JWB Contracting » Fri Jan 13, 2012 11:12 pm

We have both a 350 Gas and a 350B Diesel and both have the narrow battery box and hydrualic tank. I do confirm that there is no hydraulic filter in the tank or under the tank side lid. I will get some pictures tommorrow.

What type of option is the narrow tanks? I wonder how many of them are out there?

I would love to see some pictures of the narrow tanks. I'm not sure if I have ever seen such a critter!! I'm really curious what they look like.

This is a shot of the hydraulic tank on my 350(straight) dozer. According to the serial number, this tractor was designated as a dozer from the factory and this tank is obviously smaller than the one on the loader.

This is a shot of he hydraulic tank on my 350(straight) loader. Again, serial number designation from factory is for a loader, and is larger. (9 1/2" compared to 12 3/4")

This is of the the filler cap on the loader: note the indicator for the filter; it extends when the filter needs changing.

Just for fun posting pictures, here is a side view of my 350(straight) dozer. Don't look like much but represents a lot of money and work invested

Yes, same style of tanks that we have on a few 350s. They are all outside mount dozer machines. 2 350 gasers and 1 350B diesel.

Has anyone located a hydraulic filter on these yet?

Does anyone know what option this is and how rare they are?

We thought they were fairly rare until we located a 2nd and 3rd crawler with these narrow tanks.

Well, according to the parts book on JDparts.com They list a 9 1/2" tank and a 12 3/4" tank. In the notes for the 9 1/2" tank they say for the 6300 and 6310 dozers, which would be the inside mounted manual angle, and the outside mounted blade. Both of these (correct me if im wrong here) only use 2 cylinders for lift. I think those are the 350s that have the 9 inch tanks. What blade type is on your dozer Cdunn, looks like a 6300? The 6305, was the all hydraulic 6-way blade, which has 5 cylinders, and then the loaders had 4 decent size cylinders, I'm pretty sure they both use the 12 inch tank.

Yes, inside mount, manual angle and tilt with two cylinders as visible in side shot of the dozer. Wish I had or could afford a 6-way hydraulic blade as I use this tractor quite alot on my wooded acreage and around my lake. I just rebuilt steering clutches (parts from Lavoy) and relined the brake bands among many other things and it runs and turns real smooth.

Wide tanks on 6300 and 6310 Dozers

Post by JWB Contracting » Tue Jan 24, 2012 9:46 pm

We have 350 dozers with the wider tanks and without the 6 way hydraulic dozer. There must have been an option to order them with either style of tank.

I stashed away a 350 gas outside mount dozer, gas engine and limb riser canopy in a shed about 10 years ago with the narrow tanks thinking it was a rare model. Guess I was wrong. I have started it a few times and turn it over every year. Needs a cross memeber, track frame and undercarriage rebuild.

I am going to check the serial numbers on the wide and narrow tank machines and see if the year make a difference on what style of tank they have. Although I have the narrow tanks on a 350B diesel outside mount dozer as well. I have yet to see the narrow tanks on a 350C but have only seen these in 6 way dozer configuraton.

Always amazed at the interesting variations of dozers produced.
