frozen

Post by Bruce » Mon Jan 23, 2012 9:08 am

I have a jd 350 straight with a loader. I used the machiine last sunday with no problems this sunday the gear shifter was stuck. I figured not a problem I can use the reverser to back up but once you let of the foot clutch it will stall the engine. We have had a real cold week and I am thinking I have water somewheres it should not be. Is this water going to freeze and break something internal? What can I do?

I've read a lot of stories of broken final drives that had water in them freeze up. I would absolutely get that "unfrozen", I'd try and tarp the machine, toss a heater under it and get it thawed out where it will run. Then I'd operate the machine for 20 or 30 minutes to get it all warmed up good then drain everything and service the machine.

Odds are if you have water in your transmission you have water in everything.

Opinions and mileage may vary and maybe someone else with more specific knowledge of your 350 will jump in but that's my two cents.

FYI, the final drives on straight 350s are not hydraulically interconnected to the transmission so if you suspect or are concerned about water in those you will need to open the fill and/or drain plugs on each one to check.

Wow a gallon and a half of water plus sludge. I did have a lot of water In the steering clutch cavity from the previous owner leaving the covers off for adjustment. Could it have entered the tranny from that. I will have to keep an eye on it. It has always been hit or miss on getting it in high gear. Hopefully this helps.

Knock on wood with the steering clutches being ruined. I do have the breaks bands maxed tight but she steers dam good. I bought it for 2kthe with a hoe and a fresh rebuild on the motor. The previous owner rebuilt it then lost his steering so he got up discouraged. I did pull the plug out and ever since I still see some dripage coming from them. I will have to check the top of the tyranny for a leak thanks for all the help ken all the guys on here are great.
