in relpacing the brake bands on a straight 550 [1979] must the steering clutch assembly be removed from the machine.

You should be able to install the bands around the intact brake hub but frequent use of four letter words may be an option [I haven't did that task for quite a while]If I recall some things did get in the way!. Make sure the linkage goes back in the right way .Brake linings on 550s sometimes have a tendency to be installed with the linkage over center.It shouldn't be too bad though. .Digitup.
