steering clutch housing

Post by cberlin » Mon Mar 19, 2012 7:12 am

What is the "cap" that goes on top of the steering clutch housing under the seat of a 350C? In the john deere parts diagram they call it a "pipe plug". If I go to a hardware store and get a "pipe plug" (I'm guessing 1 1/2") would that be correct? I also see that in the parts diagram there is a "gasket" with no part number or anything. Would that just be an O-ring?

The plug you are referring to is the steering clutch housing access plug. You can adjust the brakes through this access.
I've never heard of anyone using a regular pipe plug for this application. It may very well work but I would suggest you go ahead and get the one from Deere. It will come with an O-ring already installed on the plug. When you install it, do not over tighten it as it is a "Bear" if you pull a thread. Tighten it just snug so it doesn't leak and wont back out on its own.

I could be wrong here, but I always thought those plugs were the same thread/seal setup as the large plug on a 55 gallon container of oil? I'd still get them from Deere , as I think the plugs are heavier than what you find on a drum

Well, checked on it this afternoon, the plugs on the steering clutch housings are smaller than the drum plugs. It is pipe thread, but it is straight thread not tapered.

Just went down and got an 1 1/2" pipe plug and some "majic blue". I think that is what it's called. It is thread sealer that won't break down in anything petroleum based like tranny fluid, hydro fluid, diesel, etc.
