Brake band too tight? I had similar problem with my 350 straight, too tight brake band was problem. New bands are hard to get adjusted right untll they get "seated"( I guess would be the word for it)

The first thing I thought when I saw "strong smell of amonia" the very first thing that came to my mind was mouse piss. I carry a fire extinguisher in the tractor at work for the inevitable electrical fire that will happen in the overhead counsol due to mouse piss. On these 80 degree days I wish it was open station. Guess one of these days I will have to pull it all down to rewire the whole mess.
I am sure CDunn is correct on the brake band. If it moved correctly when it had cooled down

steering clutches
so what you are saying is the brake band was seizing up even though it would still roll forward with no levers pulled back while it was hot?can to tight of a track cause any problems like that,i didnt lossen them up going into the gumbo.
