JD 450 2 probllems

Post by ld7mile » Wed Jul 18, 2012 9:13 am

I have been talking on the phone about buying a JD450C loader. I have not seen it yet. The owner said the engine had been run low on coolent and has a blown head gasket. He said it starts and runs OK now but blows coolent out of radiator.
Next he said the side panels are cracked. They support the transmission. How difficult are the panels to repair? What problem could I run into because of the engine being run while hot?

I think you need to run away from this crawler. Sounds as if this tractor has been beet to hell. There are plenty of other crawlers out there. This one aint it.

This owner sounds like he didnt know what he was doing and beat the snot out of it.

It is only my opinion.

Run don't walk I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole. Way too many 450's out there that run. Unless you are getting paid to take it than it may be worth looking at.

I agree, leave it. I know it was frustrating for me to keep looking at low end crawlers only to find them misrepresented and beat silly. The U/C that is claimed to be 80% only when you measure it to be 15% beyond life.

You have to keep going and eventually you'll find the right machine. It took me almost 18 months before I got my machine. I've had to do some work to it but overall I'm very happy and think I got one heck of a deal.

Unless you are getting it for 130 a ton then leave it the sleeves are eaten right out of it and the coolant is dumping into the motor oil .This is not a good sign you can always offer 1500 and get prepared for a parts buying spree .Digitup.

At 1500 its only worth as a parts tractor. Dont ever plan to rebuild this.

This tractor will easily run you 20-30 grand to rebuild for his mistakes.

You can buy a brand new crawler for around 35 grand.

450C 2 problems

Post by ld7mile » Thu Jul 19, 2012 9:11 am

Thank you both for your opinions. Yes, I think the machine may have been treated very ruff, because the owner said the cracks in the side panels were from rocking it with the bucket full of dirt. I wonder if this is a common problem with the 450. Maybe a weak place in the design. Has anyone heard of this being a problem with other 450 loaders?

He probably busted the bell housing bolts out of it by the sounds of things the older 450s and 450Bs would do this .It is a large job to repair but not impossible to do this crawler just sounds too beat up to do and keep alive but you would need the darned thing given to you at this point (keep looking) .Digitup.

ld7mile.......

I would not be looking for a weak place in the design, these crawlers are designed with amazing reliability built into every one. The weak place in the 450 you are looking at was in the guys who did the servicing. Bolts come loose and if you do not stay on top of it, you should not own a crawler. When undercarriage or other important bolts are loose, the cracks come soon after. I have a 350 that runs OK, starts right up and steers both ways but, because it was run loose, the loader frame is nearly broke in half in several places. other bolts are now stripped or broken. Its a mess. Just parts, not worth fixing. I bought it that way, I did not pay much for it.
There are many posts in this forum about owners welding undercarriage parts together on crawlers that work for a living, hobby ones as well, rather than risk the destruction of their equipment. It sounds like is too late for this one you are talking about.

Thanks to everyone who replyed to this post. I went and looked at the machine yesterday evening after I got off work. Each and every one of you are correct. The machine has been abused and not maintaned. He could not get it started, because the starter is loose. The frame is broke under the seat. I saw many other thing that would take a lot of work and expense to repair. The tracks and sprockets were the best part I saw about 75% good. Yes, it can be restored, but at much expense and time.
