JD 350b steering clutch problem
Hey guys, finally got straight blade swapped out for the 6 way blade , and got control handle repined. Just before changing the parts out, the steering clutches were replaced. Mechanic got everything back together and the clutches wont release on that side. Pressure plate was adjusted before it was put back in the dozer, but wont steer on that side. When you start the dozer and pull steering lever on the right side it applys the brakes and will stall the engine , but will not turn. when you pull the lever you can feel throwout bearing applying pressure to pressure plate but clutches just won`t release. You guys got any ideas before I start to tear it down. Not taking it back to the mechanic, this was probably mistake #1. Any help is appreciated.

yeah, should have known better than to let him do the work, but I guess you live and learn. Just got off the phone with him and what he`s telling me, he replaced the clutch discs and spacers but also added one extra spacer. I`m guessing that the extra spacer is what`s causing my problem. Is there any way to adjust to compensate for this extra disc to make that side release ?

Check adjustments
I would want to start by adjusting the throw out bearing up until you still have some free play.
I am confused on the extra steel comment. If new fibers and steels were installed I don't know why he would put an extra steel in. That is something us back yard mechanics do to compensate for worn fibers and disc versus replacing.
I haven't checked on a 350B, but on 440 clutches that I did last weekend, I don't think there would be room for an extra steel with new discs.

jason i agree if fibers are wore you add a steel but not with new no!! and why?but if he did add steel it would put the pressure plate out to its limits and it would not release

If he just arbitrarliy threw another steel in there, I would be he never set the fingers on the pressure plate with the clutch gauge either. I hate to say it, but pull the final, put in the correct number of discs, and set the pressure plate fingers with the gauge then you know what you have.

I pulled the final off the dozer yesterday, What a mess. None of the clutches were installed right. The pressure plate had been adjusted, it was set to where there would have been no way it would have released. The adjustment screws under the fingers were turn all the way in as far as they would go, not to mention the oil seal was damaged an letting oil in. Finally got it back together last night except for putting the track back on. Should have done it myself to begin with I guess. Thanks again for all the help.

with one extra steel in it you would have to screw the adjusters all the way in to even come close to any kind of adjustment and then it wont release glad it worked out for you
