I am looking at what the seller thinks is a 1971 JD450 track loader at 72HP. It was rebuilt in recent years and painted so the markings are not present.
I reviewed some other posts showing 5-6 digit serial numbers and asked the seller to send me the s/n for this machine so I could try and confirm what is it and sent this:
Model 7450
s/n 242
Does this make sense for a 1971 450 Track loader with 72hp? or could this be a B, C or maybe older. He says he thinks it is a straight 450.
Unfortunately I am a couple hours + drive from the machine so I have researched it after seeing it only once and found all the dry/wet clutch posts so now I am trying to pinpoint what this machine is exactly.
Thanks,
JD 450 Research
Thats not a complete S/N
Unless something was done to the machine I'm pretty sure I've read the JD450 to be something like 57hp, the 450C around 65hp.
Have him take a good high reolution picture of the serial tag and send it to you. if it was painted over that then have him do that fancy trick we were taught as kids with the pencil rubbing since plates are stamped

I would recommend reading this thread so you know what the serial number should look like:

(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment
Yes, I did read that thread and is why I posted just to see if what the seller sent had any meaning to anyone.
I understood these to be about 65HP also and was another reason I am researching to understand what this is. I assume the person he bought it from told him it was 72HP.
The seller is going to look again and get back to me.
Thanks,

if a 450 loader is anything like the 2010 loader there might be a separate serial and model number on the loader frame that may be what the seller is giving you... some of the posts for 450 tells you where the tag should be
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper

TJE,
I've got a 450 loader. That 7450 number is the loader's model number, right on the dashboard where everybody sees it and mistakes it for the tractor's tag.
The tractor's tag is located under the seat on the metal panel that your heels would hit if you slid your feet backwards. It's on the right side. Mine shows Model/Type number and Serial number. For my machine, the model is T5E3M and the s/n is 071130T, which makes it a 1968 model built in Dubuque, IA.
Good luck
