I was trying to install a hyd seal kit in my 450 loader boom cylinder but couldn't get the rod to come out. The spanner nut and snap ring came off but then the rod guide (the part that the spanner nut screws to) would only come out about 3/4 inch past the threaded part. Total movement outward including all the threads on the rod guide was maybe an inch and a half or a little more .I had a 2 ton winch pulling on it and it would not budge even a little.
Has anyone run into this before? I Have never attempted a repair like this before and began wondering if I was able to get this rod out how in the world would I ever be able to put it back in. The boom cylinders are 4 1/2 inch dia. and the rod is 2 1/4 inch. It is one heavy cylinder. I did not remove it from the machine because of that and was hoping to just pull the rod out and keep the job simpler. I was thinking maybe there was a rust buildup past where the snap ring goes .That winch broke two 1/4 inch links on a chain I was using before I thew the towel in and put it back together.Funny thing was I could push the rod back buy hand (a lot of effort) and the rod was able to rotate so it wasn't frozen..Defeated... Any ideas?

Thanks for your input I was able to get the rod out with some terrific advice from Lavoy . I have the boom frame supported on a wall of stacked cement blocks so I wouldn't have the thing come crashing down on me. I understand the nut removal will be the next fun thing. There was a lot of rust built up near the snap ring .It did let loose a waterfall of fluid all over the place as was expected When this first cylinder is done the others should be a piece of cake .ha ha.
I will most likely find the seals fall apart like you did since this is a 1969-70 450.
