Radiator Sealant suggestions

Post by Hutch350B » Fri Apr 05, 2013 12:00 am

I just replaced the headgasket on my 350B to cure and overheating problem and now I think the radiator is leaking, it looks rough on the bottom tank and loses about a quart of coolant an hour.

I will replace or have the radiator reconditioned this winter but I have a project that I need to get done and was concidering using one of the "Stop Leaks" from the parts store. Like Barrs or Alumiseal.

Any comments on these? Suggestions or recommendations?

Do they really work? I have always just fixed the problem but I am in a bind on time and behind from the head gasket problem already.

Anyway, just wondered if anyone had a strong opinion on these radiator sealers.

Did you use the pellet formular or the aluminum powder stuff? They had both kinds in Barrs brand. I was a teenager the last time I used the Barrs and it was the pellet type then....now they also have an aluminum version.

I've had good luck with both the pellets and the powder. The pellets and goop is supposed to have some sealant and water pump lubricant in it IIRC. With the cooling system capacity I'd worship both gods and put a container of each in and see if that stopped it.

They can work for a time, but you will have to watch to make sure they don't gum up and obstruct other portions of your cooling system like the thermostat.
