Reverser Back together

Post by MattE » Mon Apr 29, 2013 8:18 am

Reverser is all back together. I have attached pictures of the input shaft after it was all welded up, re-machined, and carburized. The isolation plate was bored out and I welded in a slug then EDM'd the spline pattern in.

The motor went in hard the last 1/2" so i'm hoping the pilot bearing lined up ok and I didn't knock the center race out. still debating whether AI shoudl split it to check it our or not.

I need to reiterate what Ken has already said. I would say you have trashed the pilot bearing when you said the engine went in hard the last half inch. From the looks of the input shaft in your picture, it is pretty rough where the pilot bearing rides. Did you check to see if your pilot bearing would go on to the shaft before you attempted to install it? Just curious... I would also hope that you checked all of your pre-loads on the bearings in the reverser? You can't just take them apart and put them back together with a new front cover gasket and it not change your pre-loads. Those gaskets can vary quite a bit in thickness so your end play needs to be corrected in the process.
Ken is right, I think a disassemble would be the smart move here! :D

Took it back apart, everything was fine. Makes me feel better anyway.
The look of the shaft was just do to the carburizing. It was smooth.

Preloads are set, we'll see how she runs.
