overfilled the final drives on a dry clutch machine

Post by rdobb » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:05 am

Has anyone but me ever been silly enough to put 2 1/2 gallons in there instead of 1 1/2? I drained it but the dry clutches are soaked so it won't turn at all. Are there any home remedies out there? I'm trying to finish up a small timber job.

Oil soaked clutches are ruined, sorry to say. Not sure how you got 2 1/2 gallons in a final drive, they only hold 1 1/2 quarts or so.

Would you be able to price a set of clutches and brake bands....

I'm guessing I filled it through the wrong fill plug?? It all came back out, so it didn't leak anywhere. It will barely turn forward but a little better in reverse.

Thanks, Randy.

Sounds like you will be changing the clutches. However I would try filling the clutches with a mixture of rig Wash and water. No rig wash?, then try Dunk or another grease cleaning compound that washes grease off when mixed with water. (Check the finals after for water) You might get enough grab on the clutches after to at least move the crawler around the yard. I like rig wash, it keeps on eating grease until it gets it all. It is amazing on old grease soaked concrete floors! Rinse it out well after. Leave the covers off until dry. It is not a cure, but you might get it to move.

I tried brake cleaner last night...it helped for a bit but once it warmed up it faded again. Where do you get rig wash? I'll be changing clutches after the job but just need to finish. Thanks, randy.

That's the nice part about the bronze disks.... You can clean oil out of them.
