450c crawler...return hydraulic filter
Does anyone know the location of the return inline hydraulic filter on a 1976 450c crawler. The information I have indicates near the hyd. fluid tank. Its not there. I have traced the hyd. lines to the skid plate. I have yet to find it. some people say there are 2 of them. some also say under the skid plate. needing some help here guys.
Interesting question, I was going to ask the same thing at some point in time. The manual, at least mine, shows it on top of the reservoir which mine is not. I'm going to drain the tank and add a different sight gauge with a thermometer. My oil level was low but you really couldn't tell by looking at the existing sight gauge. Ended up removing a pipe plug on top and using the fuel level dip stick to determine it was low.

The sight gauges work well if they are cleaned up. Pull it apart and tidy up the inside and you will have no problem seeing the level.

I have found the filter in the hydraulic tank. It was loose about a 1/2 inch. I pulled and cleaned it. I'm trying to find the "in Line " filter. My hydraulics slowly closed down. no power to any controls or buckets, or backhoe operations. I'm thinking the In-line maybe clogged. I just can't find the damn thing anybody no where it is?Scottyb wrote:The sight gauges work well if they are cleaned up. DrLoch I pulled the fill top where I found that filter. They also said it may have a micro filter at the bottom of the tank. mine didn't have a micro filter, just a pipe.
From the sounds of it your problem isn't with the return line filter. Generally a return filter is a low pressure filter like the oil and transmission filters. They aren't designed to pressurized much over 250 PSI if that. To cause what you are seeing would mean it is totally block which would cause a major restriction and would likely blow the filter off or cause a major leak at the gasket area. I design and built hydraulic systems for a living and I can assure you if the inline return line filter, if you have one, were the issue you would have found where it WAS mounted given the issue you are seeing. Just follow the return/tank line off the valve bank which is in that same area, if tank line goes from the valve bank to the reservoir then you don't have a return filter, which would be the same as my machine.
