Won't turn over.......

Post by Frankdozer » Fri Sep 13, 2013 6:00 pm

My John Deere 455D suddenly won't turn over. I turn on the battery switch, turn on the key and the voltage meter registers in the green. I press the start button and nothing happens. The battery is fully charged. I even used the battery booster to check the charge. I pull the light switch and the lights blaze on. The starter doesn't click or even make a sound. Can it be the solenoid? Can anyone help with ideas? Thanks, Frank

check any neutral safety switches .... see if you have start signal to the starter solenoid if you do then see if you have good contact on the main cable if so replace the solenoid

Last night I removed the 5 bolts to see behind the dash and found a mouse nest and some dirt. While cleaning it out I could hear a sort of squeaking noise and there he was, near the hydraulic lines staring at me. I tried to grab him but he was too fast and got away. I screwed the dash back on and I then set 4 mouse traps, 2 above the dash, 1 on the floor board and 1 on the track. I always put a raisin on the trap tripper and cover it with peanut butter. My theory is that he'll lick off the peanut butter then bite the raisin and then WHAMMO !!!!!! While I had the dash off I couldn't see any mouse damage such as chewing. Later today I'll make sure I have current to the start button.

I just realized something............Since my John Deere 455D is a track loader, the side engine covers are inaccessible because of the hydraulic cylinders that operate the boom up and down and the bucket. I also have the bottom engine pan on it. The dozer is in a garage with no overhead beam to chainfall up the bucket. I was hoping to get to the starter solenoid to jump it out and start it. Now What?

2nd that. Move the shift lever back and forth across the neutral position while keeping the start button pushed. On my 450C the neutral safety switch is under the left floor panel, has 2 white wires going to it.

jtrichard and Drloch , You guys are the " Kings Of Info " !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did as you recommended and Voilà !! The Skys opened up and the Angels started singing again !!!!!!
I just wiggled the lever while in neutral ever so slightly left and right and she started like a prom date. Now I have to do it every time to start it. Can I adjust the neutral switch or should I just replace it and be done with it?..........Thanks, Frank

Glad it worked out for you. You will need to adjust the shift linkage to be sure that the neutral safety switch makes in the neutral position. Mine did the same thing, if your linkage is sloppy, which mine was, you will need to adjust to a happy medium. I ended up pulling the linkage off and making a steel bushing that removed the play in the shift arm on the side of the transmission. If you lift the cover on the side where the shifters are you will see the adjusting clevis, Remove the cotter pin in the pin, remove the pin loosen the lock nut and adjust one or the other to see if you can eliminate the issue.
