JD 450C fuel pump issue ?

Post by PeterD » Tue Dec 31, 2013 4:14 pm

Hi all , happy new year from down under , I have a JD450C ex Australian Army machine that has been fantastic, recently whilst operating it the throttle dies down to idle and will not rev up. If you switch it off and leave it for a while it will run again no problems. Some times it will take 20 mins to fail, other times it can be more than 2 hrs. I have had theo fuel tank off , checked and cleaned all the fuel lines and replaced filters , fuel etc . Any clues on what to check next pls ???

Hello and welcome to the forum. From your description it sounds like the injector pump may be the culprit, mine did the same thing. Search for "Mouse Turds" or John Deer Inject pump Mouse turds" that is what the pellathane/phenolic material in the governor weight retainer cage looks like when it starts coming apart. If you take off the timing window on the side of the injector pump and you see what looks like mouse turd then that is the problem. There a couple of short term fixes if you need to move the machine, but, the correct fix is to rebuild the injector pump. You can get the parts to do it if you have the ability to rebuild it yourself.

Next time it does it, hurry up and pull the fuel cap off and see if you hear vacuum, or the engine picks up speed.

Thanks guys, I have tried the fuel cap also thinking that it might have a vacumn issue but no change, is there a online manual that outlines the procedure for fuel pump removal and re installation ?

I thought of that one as well but since he already had the fuel tank off for cleaning, checked the fuel lines and replaced the filter the next likely source is the injector pump. I even replaced the transfer pump which did little to remedy the situation.

Do you have any of the manuals on the machine? The Technical manual, TM1102 outlines the procedure for removing and re-instillation of the injector pump. If you don't have one you need to get one.

This site http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt will show a parts breakdown for the machine.

http://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/index. ... For=TM1102 This the link to the John Deere bookstore. You can Download the manual as a PDF. The operators manual is OMT71337.

Here is a link to a number of pictures of the removal and rebuilding of an injector pump.

http://www.getdieselpower.com/misc/trac ... ild/album/

Got the parts from US Diesel http://www.usdiesel.com/
Here is the list of parts they recommended to rebuild the pump..
U37268 Pump Blades
15830 Return Line
U16320 Pilot Tube
U24371 JDB/DB Kit
29111 Gov Wt Ret
13366 Advance Te
I would also suggest a Stanadyne 13371 drive shaft seal install tool. Once you remove the pump and look at the drive shaft seals you will understand.
