New guy with a JD350

Post by lazy logger » Fri Jan 24, 2014 1:20 pm

Hello everyone, I have been reading posts here for a while and it seeems like this is a great place to find info and learn about dozers. I have purchased my 1st dozer recently and so far like it. I see that there are experts here that can answer alot of questions about these. I am more into powersports ( atvs, sleds, boats) and would be glad to trade info if you like. This machine has the outboard style blade brackets and I was wondering if there is a secret to lining up the pin holes when you angle the blade. It seems they are about 3 inches from lining up in either direction. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Something is odd, usually when you put one pin in, the pin on the other side should be fairly close. Is it possible something is bent or damaged? Pivot pin worn excessively?

That's what I thought too. But nothing seems bent or worn more than normal. The only thing I can see is some repair work on the blade but they would have had to remove the same amount from both sides, because the pins are off equally either direction and not when they are centered(blade straight). Is there a spec. for the width of the blade so I can measure it?

Ok Here are some pics, I measured the blade and it's 90 inches. It's hard to tell but in the one pic. you can see the pin is hitting the main fram and keeping it from going back.

Hi,

Looks to me like the long screws, which have magically replaced roll pins, on the ends of the tilt wedges are hitting the blade frame. It has been a long time since I had my 350 with one of those blades, but IIRC those wedges wound right up against the frame when angled.

Thanks Stan, I will take a closer look, and you are correct when you say there's no such thing as a cheap crawler.

Hi,

Oh yeah! You either fork over the dough up front to get a good one, or fork it over later in parts an labor. Either way you are 'forked'! :P

Hopefully your issue is as easy as I think it is.... ;)

So I took a look at it again and it's definately the pin hitting the side of the frame, It looks like I will have to cut off and move the track rails out towards the ends of the blade to make it work. Looks like a fun afternoon with the portable welder and a cooler.

Hi,

Those bolts keeping the tilt adjust wedges in are not supposed to be there. They should have much shorter roll pins. If you remove those long bolts sticking out, there should be clearance enough for the main pins on the angle adjustment arms to slip through the blade frame.

The roll pins just keep the wedges from flying out when you smack them with the sledge hammer. I suppose they also keep you from losing the wedge if you did not get them smacked home hard enough. But, I have never had a wedge loosen up once I had it smacked home. :P

Thanks Stan, I understand what you are saying and I wish that was the case (it would be an easy fix), but the bolts are not yet touching the frame and the pin is. The only thing that makes sense to me is that when they repaired the blade they moved the tracks in to far. Now when I angle the blade the pins hit the frame and won't allow the blade to angle any further.
