450 foot brake frozen(not steering brake)

Post by clytle374 » Fri May 30, 2014 4:36 pm

My friend has a 450 that the foot brake has frozen up on. I looked at the parts diagrams for it a the JD dealer when getting some other parts and wasn't able to determine the internals of the brake. One diagram showed the external linkage, one of the steering brake, and one the clutch.
The petal isn't what's froze up and I can't see the arm until I take some things off. Anyone give me a clue as to what I'm going to find in there?

Thanks
Cory

FYI, you can see the parts for it here; just type in "450" in the search area and then look for "450 crawler tractor".

What you will find is the brake pedal is connected to two linkages, one at the pedal and one on a shaft connected to the pedal. This is on Sectional Index 35-5. One or both of these might have froze up on you and caused the pedal to bind.

For clarification, the brake bands operated by the steering levers are the same braking bands operated and linked to the foot pedal (right side) No separate brakes operated by foot pedal. Wasn't sure if there was some confusion or not.

Thanks a bunch.

The brake pedal operating the steering brakes was what was causing the most confusion since I never saw an actual brake.

The parts link is awesome too. I looked at the 450B since I couldn't find a straight 450. 35-5 didn't have the brake assembly on the one I was looking at.

So the shaft that the pedal is on will go through have another rod on the left side under the floorboard?

Thanks again.

Finally got some work done on it. Found the shafts froze up in the rear, had to drill and tap one to pull on it to get it to break loose. Brakes work and just need to get it to free up some more since you have to pull the brake petal back up by hand.
Thanks for the help

Is there supposed to be a spring on any of the linkages? Or just inside where the brake bands are at?
Thanks
