JD 350C Reverser Problem

Post by VT350C » Wed Jun 18, 2014 2:58 pm

Hello,

I have a JD 350C with newly rebuilt engine. Due to a long story that involved a blown reverser radiator circuit, we had to install a dedicated external reverser cooler...The unit probably ran for 100 or so hours with crappy radiator fluid mixed with transmission fluid.

We flushed the reverser multiple times and it is now super-clean with no signs of water or milkiness.

Question: How many hours of use would terrible reverser fluid need to ruin a reverser. What would it ruin? The clutch packs?

Why problem now is that the reverser shifts nicely into reverse, but is very slow (lagging) to go forward. But right now, it does go both forward and reverse. But after the unit warms up and fluid gets hotter, the problem gets worse (say after running the unit for 30 minutes).

I have put new fluid and reverser filter in the unit, without much change.

Folks on here have mentioned measuring the forward and reverse pressure on the valve. If that is low, does this mean a clutch pack is most likely leaking and not holding pressure? Would a leaky pack also cause the fluid to run hotter as it runs faster through the hydraulic system. The reverser fluid and housing seems hot...

Any adjustments possible before checking the pressure to "tighten up" the forward reverser setting?

Many Thanks! Bob

the heat is from the clutch pack slipping from lack of pressure from bad seals you are frying the clutch pack as you run it more

Thanks for the reply. I will need to replace the entire clutch pack anyway, correct? Not saying it's great...I have all mechanical geared transmission. Do you think it's OK to operate unit solely with gears and disconnect the reverser...at least until I can afford the repair?

Many Thanks,
Bob

You can't disconnect the reverser, it is there and functioning unless you completely remove the unit and convert the crawler to straight gear drive.
Checking pressure is free, no reason not to look into it first.

Thanks. But is it possible to leave the reverser in Forward 100% of the time and simply use the gears?

We will check the pressure for sure.

Any recommendations on how to fix? Buy a remanned one, and if so, from whom? Or rebuild my own if still OK?

Thanks,
Bob

Yes, you can leave it in forward, but if it is a pressure issue, it can still slip.
I would rebuild your own, then you know what you have.

Thanks. Not sure if I will do the rebuild, but the parts don't seem crazy, just the labor...But, yes, rebuild my own parts seems good. Do you have any estimate on the labor for this? $2-3K?

Many Thanks!

At a dealer, I wouldn't doubt that at all for complete R & R.
