Back hoe controls
Back hoe controls
I recently bought a mid 60s 450 loader equipped with the detachable backhoe. The hoe itself is in good shape, except for the controls. They are worn & wobbly, with way too much slop to operate efficiently. Are there pieces/parts available to repair/replace, or do I have to make my own?
Also, what engine RPM is recommended when using the hoe?

Parts may be available, you would have to check with a dealer. Price may be prohibitive, so I would probably find a way to rebuild.
I personally run no more throttle than necessary. Wide open wastes fuel, hard on stuff, controls react too fast for some situations, etc.

I would think so, will take some rigging to get it all mounted and plumbed. It would have to handle about 25 GPM, and have an adjustable pressure relief. Also would need to be an open center valve.

There are a number of threads on this board talking about the valve stacks on the open center hoes and other parts for the controls, although I am not sure we ever talked about the lever linkage. You may want to read them- one of the participants was Jdemaris so you can search by author for him and by subject for "valve stack".

backhoe slop
When you say way to much slop... normally all the slop would be in the mechanical linkage before the valve body which activates the valve body.
look at the pins and bushings in the lever controls... just wobble them around and watch how much movement it takes before the valve spoll moves... chances are most wear is in the mechanical part,, do this with the machine not running as it is safer this way and you will feel the resistance of the spool valve.... best of luck .. Mark.

re....worn valve holes?
our pre 42000 2010 had worn pin holes.....went to lowes...ace hdwe...etc...found brass tubing like 5/16id or od....fits pretty snug in handle and allows the pin to fit thru the tubing...just have to be sure of size of the tubing....sure takes a lot of slop out of em.....

I finally got the cover off the controls, as I thought, the joystick mounts are all wallowed out at the pins. I might try to machine the hole larger and use a bushing/insert. Both pieces are worn pretty well good. What are the chances of these parts still being available? Might be a little pricey, but worth the aggravation.
You can look at the JD parts website to find out- you just need to know which backhoe model you have and go from there:speedbear wrote: What are the chances of these parts still being available? Might be a little pricey, but worth the aggravation.

I took a quick look at the 93/95 hoes, and the handle linkage is still available from Deere but pricey (meaning hundreds of dollars).

Hi Speedbear-
You can call if you would like, but you can also set up a free account at that same link and once you log in you can see the list priced for each part from Deere once you add it to your "parts cart". My understanding is the dealers stick pretty closely to those prices shown on the parts website, and in fact you can select your local dealer when you look up prices on that site.
I prefer this because I have found that the dealers can be clueless about your particular model if it is 40+ years old. However with the correct part numbers they should be able to find it eventually.

Internet Parts at JD web site
I have found that one dealer in michigan is about 12% over web prices guessing parts sales people get a percentage of their sales so I quit using them and found another one that does not have that policy . Might want to compere dealers.

The 93 is a "center of tractor" hoe; the 95 is a "slider" hoe. It's pretty easy to tell those two apart.speedbear wrote:What is the difference between a 93 or 95 hoe? I don't know which I have. The part I need is what the joy stick threads into.

However you may not even have one of those; it is not unheard of that an older hoe gets put on a 450 as they are all open center hydraulics.
