1988 JD 350 D

Post by CuttingEdge » Wed Sep 10, 2014 4:50 pm

Does anyone know if this bulldozer (1988 John Deere 350 D) has a PTO?

If it does, can the PTO be engaged while operating the crawler?

I have a farm tractor style type of winch I would like to use on it, which relates to the first question. The second question was posed because I have some rough areas in my pastures that would be best done with a bulldozer and bush hog.

Hi,

Very few 350s were bought with the optional PTO. Chances are any one you think you might want to go look at does not have one.

If it is the same as the B models, it probably can be added, but can not be shut off, it does not have its own control lever like on the straight 350's. Plus if you pull the reverser lever, it will also reverse the PTO, so I think you would find it wholly unsuitable for what you are talking about.

That is too bad, but thanks for the quick replies.

(It might be interesting to note that even locomotives have a pto shaft (6 spline) that could be coupled up to the traction motor axle. When I worked on the railroad we never used a locomotive to thresh wheat as 4,000 hp might be a wee bit of over kill, but did use the pto shaft located under a bolt on cap to turn the wheels down when using a portable cnc lathe).

Hi,

The PTO is the same on the older crawlers as well. They do have an in/out lever but only one main clutch for everything. If you have a direction reverser, it reverses the PTO.

Ironically, they were said to be live PTO, by virtue of being able to stop the machine by pulling back on both steering levers and not depressing the engine clutch pedal.

I sometimes use my 420c with a trailing brush hog. It is nice in that I do not have to be concerned with something poking a tire. But, I have to work such that I don't have to reverse as much as I can. If I do, I have to yank the in/out lever and then wait for the thing to stop before starting all over again.

Oh, and the pull both levers to stop moving and leave the mower running is for the birds. It works, but a real pain in the arms to use for more than a few seconds! :P

What if you bought a overrunning PTO coupler from a farm tractor dealership...would this stop the overrunning problem? I know our old Ford 900 had the same live PTO problem and this solved the problem for $30 bucks. Well worth it for that tractor at least.
