1971 JD 450B oil leak
My 450B is leaking oil. A lot of oil by where the block of the motor bolts up to the bell housing or whatever that's called. Back end of motor block behind starter. I was thinking maybe rear main seal but a guy that works on a lot of tractors said if it was a rear main even if the seal was worn really bad it wouldn't leak that much. It just pours out a lot. before it only leaked a quart an hour or a bit more but now it leak so fast I cant used it without adding oil every half hour. Any help would be great.
Thanks

After reading your post again you are talking about engine oil . The oil behind the starter there is a oil pressure port with a oil sending unit that goes to the oil pressure gauge .

even though this post was for a 350 probably the same basic thing you have going http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... g+oil+leak .. some good info is gone from the thread because kenp had to be such an A-HOLE and take his marbles and go home

jakebrey. If it is in fact engine oil, as Dave said there is a port just above the starter and the oil could very well be coming from there. However, if the oil is coming out between the engine and clutch housing it is likely a damaged or missing o-ring. There is a port in the back of the block directly in line with the port above the starter. This port takes an o-ring, square cut I believe, between the rear plate and the clutch housing. No mention of it in the service manual that I can find or the parts manual. But I'm certain it's there. Worked on many over the years and it's easy to forget to put it in. Good Luck. Engine Removal
I find it easier to pull an engine on a loader machine. The dozer frame whether it is an inside or outside mount gets in the way. We block the loader up and then use a shop crane to pull the hard nose and engine assembly.
On our working 350C loaders, with 2 men we have pulled the motor in just under 30 minutes. Not many bolts to remove and we have a 1 wire alternator and mechanical gauges, no factory retainers or front floor boards. When you know the size of wrench needed for each task and the order they come out like clock work. Basically one man on each side for the wiring, fuel lines and controls then one front and back on mounting bolts. Electric and air wrenches required.

I was thinking more about an inside blade dozer than an outside blade dozer when considering working around them. I have both loaders and dozers and it just seems like it is easier to get to the mounting bolts on the dozer without the loader arms but have to admit I haven't pulled engines on those. I also don't like the idea of a loader extended above me (even with the angle irons chained to the cylinders).
