450c wants to turn right...
1974 450c dozer
After about 40-50ft going forward, it slowly starts turning right. Back up a couple feet and go forward another 40 feet and it does the same thing. Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks...

Hi,
Sounds like you lost drive on the right side steering clutch. The track is moving, but the ground makes that happen, so the drag causes a slow steer to the right. If so, then pulling the left lever ought to stop the machine if the clutch is gone, or slow it way down if the right clutch is slipping.
You can also try the 'stick the blade or bucket against a big tree and see if the tracks spin' trick.

I just bought this machine. It belonged to a local county school board. On the last day before retirement, 2 mechanics replaced the right side clutches and left before even checking to see if it was working. After finding out later that it didn't work, the county auctioned it off. Now I have it.
Blocking both tracks off the ground, both tracks will start turning when you first put it in gear. After they turn over about twice, the right one stops. Left is fine. I'm wondering what these two mechanics did wrong to cause the machine to act this way.

Hi,
I would check the hydraulics on the bad side first. The hyd pressure pushes the clutch to engage drive, so if you lose that the clutch disengages and loses drive.
Much easier to mess with that than pull it all apart to find out it was a hyd pressure issue....

BTW...thanks to all for the ideas and help..
Stan, I'm getting hyd pressure to the left side clutch as it is pulling good. I buried the blade and left side digs in good. Also, left brake works well. Right clutches and brake not working on right.
Also, serial #201xxx so its a 1974. First year for 450c I guess??? So it is an early one.

There might be a clue there the problem was misdiagnosed from the start.
As suggested, I'd check the work to see if it was all done properly but there is a possibility the problem exists upstream of where the work was done. Good luck! These things can be frustrating but they do feel good when you get a bargain that turned out to be caused by a pea sized blob of sealant somewhere.

Snow is flying so I put it in a warm garage.
Talked to a local service manager that is supposed to be a whiz on the older
machines. He also thinks it is something simple that is the problem. From
just running enough to get into the garage, it has filled the final drive to
overfull. Local guy seems to think the set screw may have not been set and the brake drum may have cut the rubber hose to the clutches, hence pumping a lot of oil.
Question: Do I have to pull the final drive housing to replace the intermediate shaft oil seal?
